Gun control once sharply divided Democrats, but with the politics of guns changing, the House is about to pass the first major gun bills in a generation.
WASHINGTON — House Democrats are poised this week to adopt legislation requiring background checks for all gun purchasers, the first major expansion of gun control laws in a quarter century and the opening salvo in a broader drive to address an issue that once sharply divided the party. In back-to-back votes, the House will take up two separate background check measures. On Wednesday it will consider the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, which would require background checks for all firearm sales, including those sold at gun shows and online. The action in the House reflects dramatic changes in the political climate over guns that culminated with last year’s midterm elections.“It’s a real moment for the nation,” said one of those Democrats, Representative Lucy McBath of Georgia, who began advocating for gun control after her 17-year-old son, Jordan Davis, was shot dead in 2012. “We’re at a critical mass now where families are just saying they’ve had enough.” · Both measures face dim prospects in the Republican-controlled Senate. Senator John Thune of South Dakota, the No. 3 Republican, said Tuesday it was “unlikely” the Senate would take them up. But this week’s House action is still significant.

Passage of the legislation also took place hours after an emotional hearing on gun violence in which families of victims pleaded for more action. The House Gun is a novel by the South African writer Nadine Gordimer. It was first published in South Africa in 1998. The novel is set in Johannesburg in 1996, in the post-apartheid and focuses on the upper-middle-class white family, Harald Lindgard, his wife Claudia, and their adult son, Duncan.
Cowley later compared the novel to J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace in a 1999 New Statesman column: "Nadine Gordimer, too, in her most recent novel, The House Gun, has written astutely about post-apartheid violence in her parable of a white man who murders his lover and then is defended in court by a black lawyer."Jason Cowley wrote in a profile of Gordimer for The Times: "The House Gun ought to confound any sceptics.Duncan faces the death penalty for his crime, a test case for the Constitutional Court. Harald and Claudia hire Hamilton Motsamai, an accomplished black defense lawyer, who built his career overseas. Duncan it turns out, is bisexual, shared a house with three homosexuals and is Carl's ex-lover.

There is a gun? There might be murder. This is the story of the most common, everyday kind of family conflict and drama. It gets intense at times. There are moments when some members of the family feel despair and hopelessness, or anger and wild resentment. Add a House Gun, and the house turns into a crime scene. The House Gun is a relatively slow paced psychological novel that opens with a murder case. When I started reading this novel, I was blissfully unaware of anything about this writer, including the fact that Nadine Gordimer is a recipient of a Nobel prize for literature. The cover didn't give me much to work with either, but sometimes it is refreshing to read something without prior research. It gives you a sort of fresh perspective. Based on the cover, The House Gun could have been a crime novel for all I knew. Once I settled into the narrative, I could tell it was not a typical murder story but I like how it kind of starts off as a crime novel.Within the whispering, shuffle and creak, they are not obvious among strangers; as for themselves, theirs is a single identity they now have that years of marriage never achieved. There is only this court, this time, this existence, mother/father. - House Gun by Nadine Gordimer .

Shotgun houses are an important part of America's architectural history and are unique in both design and story
Dubbed shotgun due to its slender architecture that would theoretically allow a bullet to be fired from one end to the other, these houses are scattered across the country but are most common in southern states, namely New Orleans.A house style that popped up in the 19th century, shotgun houses were a popular architectural style that was easy to design and construct, a solution to housing shortages during the Civil War.While shotgun houses vary in style, almost all are less than five meters wide, composed of a distinctive wood frame, and are raised slightly above the ground.Shotgun houses are unique in both design and story, representing an important chapter of America's history.
Learn about the unique history, design, and benefits of shotgun houses. These compact homes are making a comeback in modern urban living.
When exploring the abundant variety of architectural styles across the United States, the term "shotgun house" often stands out. Known for its distinctive appearance and practicality, the shotgun house has a rich historical significance and a unique architectural design that has endured for centuries.A shotgun house is a narrow, rectangular home with a characteristic layout: the rooms are aligned in a straight row with no hallways, often allowing you to see straight through the entire house from front to back when the doors are open.Shotgun houses have such an interesting history, all about efficiency and adaptability, shaped by culture and economics. Their design is believed to trace back to Haitian and West African building traditions, brought to the U.S. by enslaved Africans through the Caribbean. These homes really took off in the American South during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Cities like New Orleans, Charleston, Memphis, and Louisville were full of them, offering affordable, space-saving housing for working-class families.
Frustrated WA gun owners have gathered in droves at Parliament House to support a crossbencher's motion to scrap Labor's controversial firearms regulations, but opposition from the Greens means it will not succeed.
Frustrated WA gun owners have gathered in droves at Parliament House to support a crossbencher's motion to scrap controversial firearms regulations, but opposition from the Greens means it will not pass parliament. The regulations faced a backlash from gun owners and the WA Nationals, who have thrown their support behind the motion, as well as One Nation MLCs. The changes were meant to make it harder to get licences, including by requiring stronger evidence of why firearms are needed. Most people will be limited to 10 firearms under the new laws, although that's reduced to five for hunting licences. The rally drew more than 1,000 people to WA's Parliament House. One man was unhappy with how long it took to get a gun licence now, saying he had been waiting for three months. Police Minister Reece Whitby said support for the motion was concerning given "what's on the line". "We're in very dangerous situation. There is massive amounts of misinformation," he said. "You've got the proponent of the disallowance motion in the upper house telling people that everything will be OK, we can go back to the original '73 legislation.Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas, who previously supported the motion in the lower house, did not make himself available for reporters on the way into parliament this morning about his stance on the issue. The government said the laws are designed to keep the community safe by keeping guns out of the hands of violent offenders.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed significant gun control legislation for the first time in more than two decades, a move that Democrats hope will intensify a pressure campaign for a vote in the Senate.
Currently, only licensed gun dealers must perform background checks for anyone seeking to purchase a firearm. Most unlicensed sellers do not; H.R. 8 would make that illegal. There are exemptions to the law like “gifts to family members and transfers for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense,” according to the House Judiciary Committee website. The bill, sponsored by a bipartisan duo of Reps. Mike Thompson, a California Democrat, and Peter King, a New York Republican, remains an outlier right now in the House since it has bipartisan support. Most of the legislation related to gun control has been sponsored by Democrats. At a 25-year anniversary party for the gun control group the Brady Campaign on Tuesday evening, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed confidence that the universal background checks bill would pass the House of Representatives.Schumer predicted that the country is on the “precipice of great change” on the issue of gun safety. “We have a Democratic House that will not flinch. We have a Senate Democratic minority that will not flinch.
Found throughout New Orleans and other Southern cities, these tiny homes are only one room wide and one story high. Learn more about this architectural style.
Let’s bite the bullet and talk about these old-school Southern residences.Living small has been a big trend for a few years now for a number of economic and environmental reasons. To meet the demand, many tiny house makers offer downsizing solutions that offer simplicity without sacrificing a bunch of the good stuff. But more-is-more living in smaller footprints is hardly a new thing.Studio apartments have existed since the 1880s. California bungalows hovering around the 1,000-square-foot mark were being built as long ago as the early 20thcentury. And then there are the shotgun houses, which became popular in the early 19th century. That’s easy. Shotgun houses are one-story and very narrow structures—we’re talking one-room wide, so maybe 12 feet total!—that average anywhere from 650 to 1,050 square feet. Because they were built with efficiency and affordability in mind, they were built very close together.
